Building Public Trust in AI Governance

AI is already advancing faster than governments, courts, and civic institutions can adapt. Across jurisdictions, binding laws, such as the EU AI Act, coexist with voluntary frameworks in the UK, yet both are collectively labeled as “AI regulation.”

This mix of hard and soft rules is a global phenomenon, and obscures accountability, fragments enforcement, and leaves many communities without a meaningful voice in decisions that will define their future. The AI Collective Institute exists to bridge that gap. We are a public-interest initiative bringing together technologists, policymakers, organizers, community leaders, and researchers to make oversight a participatory practice. This is long-horizon work that begins now.

Researchers can contribute insight, organizers can surface local needs, policymakers and builders can collaborate on pilots, and anyone interested can sign up for updates or propose partnerships.

What’s Next for the Institute

Aurix joins the Collective

Today, we officially welcome Aurix into the Collective. Known for its work highlighting frontline stories in AI, Aurix has developed systems for synthesizing insights and amplifying the voices of those often overlooked. Co-Founders Noah and Catherine will help advise and drive our work, supporting the Institute and equipping us to connect technical developments to the people and communities shaping them.

Engaging directly in policy

The Collective is becoming more actively involved in shaping governance. In March, we responded to the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy’s request for input on AI accountability. We're continuing to build capacity to engage with policymakers, making sure the perspectives of builders, researchers, and organizers are part of what is being developed.

Launching the Signal Fellowship

To support that work, we’re incubating the Signal Fellowship as a program to support researchers, practitioners, and civic leaders doing frontier research in AI governance. Fellows will produce concise, accessible briefs and collaborate across domains to identify emerging governance challenges. Over time, this will expand into public tools, workshops, and microgrants to support participatory oversight globally.
